Day 331: Hiking with the Family

Chances are where you are there is somewhere where you could go hiking with your family. Depending on the weather, this can be a wonderful way to get some fresh air, spend quality time as a family, and to enjoy the beauties of the great outdoors.

Having a successful hike, however, requires the right kind of preparation. Firstly, you need to make sure that you have the proper clothing. If it is warm you need to wear loose, comfortable clothing and possibly a hat and sunblock toward off sunburn. If it is cold, it is a good idea to bring different layers of clothing, such as multiple pairs of socks thermal underwear, sweaters, and coats. Also very important areour shoes. You should not usually wear sandals to a hike, but shoes that can become to be walked in for a long period of time and that are not too warn on the bottom so that they can handle the rough terrain and won’t cause you to slip and injure yourself.

Secondly, it pays to know where you’re going. Plot out your route beforehand, and get familiar with the GPS system on your phone if you have one. In addition to bringing your phone, it’s often a good idea to bring a set of walkie-talkies in case your group gets separated and there isn’t cell phone service in a remote area.

Finally, make sure that you have proper nourishment and hydration. Everyone should carry something on them just in case we get separated. Be sure to bring plenty of water, more than you probably think you need and snacks to give you energy that are high in protein and complex carbohydrates. If you bring things that are too sugary, they might slow you down and make you feel a short burst of energy and then cause you to crash.

Above all, don’t forget the camera. If you’ve done your preparation right, you have such a good time that you won’t want to forget it.
