Day 312: “Heartland”, a Poem on Fatherhood

I loved her first, I held her first
and a place in my heart will always be hers.
From the very first breath she breathed,
when she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
and I prayed that she’d find you someday,
but it still hurts to give her away.
I loved her first.

  1. so precious!
Now that I’m old with kids of my own (all adults themselves) I realize how my choice of husband must’ve pained my father on my wedding day. Although he said very little on the subject, and smiled through the day so as not to ruin it, i knew he didn’t think I’d chosen wisely and I’m sure he also knew the marriage wouldnt last. He was an extraordinarily wise and good man my father..the type who listened but didn’t judge and allowed me to come to realizations on my own without ever saying “I told you so.”
I credit most of my successful parenting skills to following his example. He seemed to know instinctively when to step aside and let me make mistakes without making me feel bad when the inevitable fallout happened. “you live, you learn, you do better next time,” is probably the best advice any parent can give a child.
