Day 243: Fictional Fathers: Mulan’s Father

In Disney’s version of The Little Mermaid, we get another perspective of an overprotective father in the person of King Triton. He lectures his daughter Ariel over and over about the dangers of humans and the many threats that they pose to sea creatures. No matter how much he begs and pleads and then finally lashes out in anger to destroy her collection of human artifacts, Ariel still doesn’t learn. In fact, all of these things drive her to seek fulfillment else elsewhere and she gets tangled up with the sea witch, Ursula.

Thankfully, things turn out okay, but not until after much hardship and trial. Sometimes the only way that children will learn is through their experience. It can be difficult to watch our children go through trials like this, but sometimes we had have to know that it might be the only way. That doesn’t mean that we should stop trying to teach them, but we should know that sometimes there are many different teachers.
