Day 122: Packing a Diaper Bag

Now that you’re a father, one of the things are going to need is the diaper bag. Though most people call it a diaper bag, it should contain much more than just diapers. Ideally, the bag should be big enough to hold quite a few things. I recommend something that has different compartments so that you can organize what you need. It is truly remarkable that such a little person could require so many things for his maintenance.

Here’s a list of some things you might want to include in your diaper bag besides diaper:

  • baby wipes
  • diaper rash ointment
  • extra food for the baby
  • burp cloths
  • pacifiers
  • any medications the baby is taking or might need
  • One to two changes of clothes for the baby
  • stain fighting stick
  • toys for the baby

This is by no means an exhaustive list. Basically anything that helps you take care or entertain the baby goes in the bag.

One caution, however, is if you keep food or drink in the bag. Sometimes you go along while without using the diaper bag and it can be easy to forget food or drink left in there. That is why I generally only put nonperishable foods in the diaper bag. I have, however, a few times forgotten a bottle filled with milk or juice and come back to it much later. Believe me, you don’t want to do that. It is a smell of truly epic proportions and tainted everything else in the bag so that we had to clean it out wash the bag and replace everything inside it.

Some may think it looks strange, but I see a dad holding a diaper bag as a symbol of honor.
