You know how nice it feels to be wrapped up tight in a thick comforter on a winter’s night? Babies get used to that all the time when they are wrapped up in the womb. It takes a few days before the baby’s internal temperature regulation kicks in well on its own, so swaddling helps keep the baby warm.
For young babies, it is an especially effective way to calm a baby down. It is relatively easy to do, and be done with most blankets. You do have to be careful, however, to do it correctly or you risk doing damage to the developing joints of the baby. The idea is to be snug, but not too tight with the wrapping.
