Day 93: The Swimming Hole

During the summer months, something that will get you major popularity points with your kids is taking them swimming. Even if you don’t have a pool or a neighbor that has a pool that you can use, swimming is a relatively inexpensive pastime. Most communities have a public pool or even a local water park. Even if the pool does not have a lot of fancy slides and attractions, there are many fun activities that you can do in the pool to keep your kids entertained. Here are just a few that we enjoy:

1. Marco Polo. This is a classic game in which one person closes their eyes and yells out “Marco!” And all of the others in the pool have to yell out “Polo!”.  Who knows why the famous explorer has this game after him.

We played a version in which people could run around the pool out of the water and jump in somewhere else. If the person who was it called “fish out of water” anyone who was out of the water would automatically be it next.

2. Sharks and minnows. This is another game in which one person is it, and is the shark, while everyone else are the minnows. The minnows line up against the edge the pool and the shark stays in the pool.  The shark yells “go” and the minnows jump into the pool, and try to swim to the other side before the shark catches them. Anyone the shark touches is out has to sit out for the rest of the game. The last minnow swimming wins.

These are just some of the games you can play in the pool.  Need more ideas of pool games? Try this site: http://janne.cc/2009/06/18/beyond-marco-polo-35-fresh-swimming-pool-games-for-summer/
It doesn’t matter what you do in the pool, only that you spend some time as a family during the summer months.
