Day 89: Mahatma Gandhi

“An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”

When and where did they live? He was born on Oct 2nd, 1869 in Bombay, India and died Jan 30th 1948 in New Dehli, India.

What are they the father of? Why is he famous?  During Gandhi’s life, India was a colony of the British Empire and Gandhi was an important leader for Indian nationalism.  His hallmarks were non-violent resistance and an emphasis on human rights for all.  Under his leadership, India eventually gained its freedom.  An assassin ended his life, though his legacy lives on in India and across the world as a civil rights leader.

How many children did they have?  Did they follow in their father’s footsteps? He was married, though took a vow of celibacy in 1906. Before this, however, he had four sons. His marriage was an arranged one as was the custom, though they stayed together throughout their lives. He spent most of his time aloof to his children, seeing this as a way to show that he was above the caste system of the time that treated different people in different ways based on their origin.
